Tips for taking care of your wig and ensuring its longevity

As our wigs are 100% human hair, it’s easy to just recommend that you treat your new wig how you would treat your hair if you were striving for the absolute healthiest hair. However, as hair extensions, wigs, hair pieces, etc, don’t benefit from growing out of your actual scalp, there are further care requirements to ensure your wig maintains its beautiful and silky texture long term.

We’ll address the obvious tips first

The basics

  • Limit the amount of heat used on your wig. When using heat, you’ll need to use a heat protectant and apply a hydrating oil afterwards

  • If you are sleeping with your wig on, use a silk pillow and a silk hair bonnet

  • To avoid excessive shedding, please don’t tug at your hair when brushing. We recommend softly brushing your hair from the tips and working through any knots that naturally form as you work your way up

  • You need to gently brush your hair regularly–anywhere from daily to a few times a day depending on your activity level and any clothes you wear that may promote excessive tangling

  • Although our hair can be dyed, we recommend not dying already coloured hair. If you’d like to experiment with colour, we recommend that you purchase our Naomi wig which is a natural colour

A little extra care

  • MOISTURE IS KEY

  • Washing your hair everyday is an absolute no no. As wigs don’t benefit from the natural oils your scalp produces, it lacks the ability to access nutrients and moisture naturally. You will need to rely on taking really great care of your wig and adding moisture in the form of oils, leave in conditioners, deep conditioners and creams

  • We recommend alternating between co-washing your hair with conditioner and shampooing with a sulfate free shampoo. We recommend you alternate around twice a month

  • Make sure you detangle your hair fully before giving your wig a wash

  • Please be gentle when washing or co-washing your hair. A 5 - 10 minute soak and a delicate lather will suffice. No heavy rubbing!

  • You will need to deep condition your hair with a moisturising conditioner anytime you wash or co-wash your hair (luckily only every few weeks as per our recommendation). By deep condition, we mean to look out for products that require around 45 minute treatments

  • We recommend oiling your hair weekly with a trusted hair oil

  • When working up a sweat, we recommend to use a sweat band and keep your hair out of your way by either tying it up or braiding it

  • We recommend storing your wig in a silk bag when you are not wearing it

  • Avoid friction as this causes unnecessary tangling. This means to be conscious of the fabric that is rubbing on your hair (ex: you wouldn’t want your hair to be rubbing against a fur collar from a coat you’re wearing)

Final thoughts

If you follow the above, you’ll set yourself up for maximising the lifespan of your wig and ensure your hair remains beautiful, healthy, bouncy and hydrated 🤍
